Little Traverse Conservancy

Among my favorite projects over the last decade has been my ongoing work with the Little Traverse Conservancy. The organization is one of the most prominent land trusts in the country. Over three decades in operation, Little Traverse Conservancy protected thousands of critical farmland, shoreline and wildlife habitat across Northern Michigan. My images are either used to celebrate a project’s success or to help raise vital funds for its completion.

Whatever the purpose, my marching orders are the same. I must capture the essence and beauty of a place and those unique values that make a property worth protecting, whether its scenic, agricultural, historical, recreational, riparian, or habitat.

The task involves me trolling, sometimes for hours, searching for the one epic shot. Equal parts challenging and rewarding, I’m often up before the sun or chasing it well into the evening. These annual excursions have been a fabulous homecoming, providing a wonderful excuse to reconnect with the landscape of my youth.  An added benefit has been the kindness of people involved with the Little Traverse Conservancy. Whether staff, board members or land owners, you just couldn’t ask for better people to work with.

Landscape photography with a sense of purpose, and abundant personal reward: my idea of the perfect job.
